  1. There were incidents of bubonic plague throughout the Netherlands in the 17th century. The outbreak that decimated a fifth of the population in London in 1665 originated from Amsterdam and arrived in Dutch trading ships in bales of cotton. The first victims in this city were two Flemish weavers who had also arrived with these ships.
