  1. It's all a significant part of American History.

The first man who changed the way various English words are to be spelled was Webster. He did so for two reasons:

    1. He wanted to simplify the spelling of such words to give Americans an easier time. Thus he reduced the spelling of words with "ou" to just "o" (ex. "colour" to "color") and "is" to "iz" (ex. "organise" to "organize--this made it easier phonetically if you're wondering).

    2. Another reason was that during the time of his existence, (the early 18th century)--Americans were developing their identity being that we won the Revolutionary War. We were no longer under the shadow of England/Great Britain, but an entity of our own with a culture of our own. Therefore, we created our own distinct culture through literature (Emily Dickinson is a good example of this field), music, and thanks to Webster, our language.

  2. For much of written human history there hasn't been a received spelling pattern (Dutch was only formalised in 1948). The main reason Americans spell words differently (AND INCORRECTLY) is because they got Webster to write the first American Dictionary while Oxford University wrote the first British Dictionary. Mom is an accent, and the spelling was changed to be more phonetic.

By the way Samuel Johnson who wrote the first dictionary (not sure which kind) wasn't dyslexic, but he was obsessive-compulsive.
