  1. Yes, but one generally made their own crystal set.  There wasn't much to hear.

  3. Usually radios of that era were homebuilt jobs or ones that the average person would not really be able to use as most of the traffic at the time was commercial or amateur radio. But there are documented hints of some broadcasting happening but I don't think the receivers were something that you could go to sears and buy as those I think came about more in the 1920s

"Consumer" is a modern term.  Youngsters (mainly male) were building and using radios in the USA from 1907 - see first link).  This was more restricted in the UK and Europe and the BBC was created in 1922 to fill the gap (second link) which was the first regular service although there were news broadcasts from  8MK in Michigan from 1920.
