Question:

Was the superior sensitivity of the female clitoris of any benefit in evolution?

I saw "The v****a Monologues" and the actress said that the female clitoris is more sensitive than the tips of the fingers and the tongue and is twice as sensitive as the male p***s. Why would this be of value in our evolution. After all, if a man wanted to have intercourse with a woman when we were hunter/gatherers for many years he didn't have to court her with flowers and candy.

  1. Because if we didn't get SOME pleasure out of intercourse, we wouldn't have "submitted" (thumbs down from the womynists?)

Plus, all that sensitivity helps to set off a reflex of contractions that help the sperm travel up the canal (along with the large amounts of mucous present during ovulation)

  2. I asked a physical anthropologist friend of mine this once.  She shrugged and said, "Can't make a p***s without a clitoris".  All female mammals have clitorises, and most don't have them quite so unfortunately placed as ours are (her answer to this, "That's what we get for walking upright".  sigh).

The clitoris probably does have more impact on human sexuality and evolution than you think, even if it is just a fluke of nature.  Despite the popular image of a caveman clubbing a woman and dragging her back to the cave by her hair, it's most likely that s*x, in humans, is a pair-bonding thing as much as a procreation thing.  Rape doesn't create a pair-bond.  But you can see a lot of evidence for the bonding theory.  Women are receptive sexually  all of the time, barring headaches.  We also don't have an obvious "heat".  Most female animals are pretty clear on when they are ovulating, but often even women don't know when that is.  We also view s*x as a private act, between two people alone, usually, which is quite rare.  Most animals mate out in the open.  The privacy and intimacy probably help with the pair-bonding thing, while also keeping group dynamics healthy.  We're a social species, and you don't want the others in the group who think your mate's s**y to get jealous watching you two do it.  All in all, if s*x is primarily a bonding activity, which is what the evidence suggests, the C**t is very important.  You want the woman to enjoy it as much as the guy, or else it's kind of boring and icky.  My guess is, Victorian women didn't have the woozy, isn't he awesome? bonding feeling after s*x.

  3. The answer is actually biologically relevant.  When a woman orgasms, the vaginal walls contract strongly causing the entire body to spasm.  The contracting of the vaginal wall is meant to pull sperm toward the fallopian tubes and into the ovaries.  This results in a greater possibility for conception.  So over time, women who had a more sensitive clitoris had more children, slowly increasing the number of women with a sensitive citoris until it has reached it's current point of evolution.
