  2. There was a combined Sundial/Compass, but I am not sure if it was ever given to the Irish Soldiers.

  3. A little attempted humour maybe?

    Sundial Compass

These instruments were used by explorers and navigators to determine apparent time regardless of where they were on the earth's surface. The compass is set on any surface and orientated to magnetic north. Using the built in spirit level and adjusting the feet so the instrument is perfectly level the sundial is then tilted to compensate for the latitude. The shadow cast on the dial then gives the current apparent time. These high quality replicas make a fascinating desk ornament or gift and come in a presentation box which measures 140 mm square and 55 mm. high.

  4. Dunno, but a watch is also a compass.  Point the hour hand at the sun and North/South lies between the hour hand and 12
