Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catharine of Aragon on the grounds that she was his brother's wife. But the pope refused the divorce as the marriage had been consummated. He then broke away and set himself up as the head of the church of England and divorced C of A.

Before this were there any divorces or did he start it all off.

  1. Just 40 years before King Henry and Catherine divorced, the French king Charles VIII had divorce his first queen,in order to marry Anne of Brittany by force (Anne was a wealthy heiress of the Duchy of
Brittany). But this case was permitted by the Pope,it was also regarded as a scandal in later 15 th century.
