Was there slavery in the 1500's?

Slavery existed since prehistoric times. However in civilized countries like Spain and England they had indentured servitude. If you owed someone and failed to pay your debt you were sent to debtors prison and put to work. Both countries had a habit of sending people off to their respective colonies. Great way of getting free labor without the stigma.

People have always enslaved other people.  It was actually more common in ancient history for whites to enslave other whites.  The problem with that was it was hard to track down a white slave in the Anglo environment.  That was one main reason of the start of black slavery.  I found that very interesting.  I hate the thought of slavery and find it appalling. I am so ashamed of the American history of slavery.  My ancestors weren't in the country at that time.  I'm glad.
