Was there some scientific breakthrough where they claimed to be able to make skin invisible?

I remember hearing, maybe 6 years ago, that there was some scientific news about being able to rub a lotion on a persons arm and making the arm somewhat translucent in order to aid doctors for medical observations. Do you remember hearing this? Was it just a hoax?

I do not remember hearing about a lotion, but there are ways being developed which can alter light waves and make people "invisible." I also saw a futurist take on it, showing how doctors might be able to parlay that into ways of seeing into the body without doing surgery. It was quite technical; I'm sure it is years off.
