i was looking out my window a couple days ago and i saw what i think was a plane.

there was a light in the sky that was kind of flickering yellow and then it got realy bright. kind of like a car turning on its brights and then it muct have gone behind a cloud i didnt see because it kind of disappeared and then i saw it float across the ky but then it looked more like a regular plane. with the red light in the front and a white flickering light in the back.

and just now i saw 2 bluish white lights very close together looked like part of the same plane. and then it got realy bright just like it did with the other one and then it got realy dim.

were these planes? if so how come i h ave never seen planes turn on there brights like that at night before. i live sort of near an airport so they are very close to landing if you need to know.

  1. well it wasnt a bird...

  2. The planes that you saw that suddenly showed a bright light were most likely turning on their landing lights if you live near an airport.

  3. it was a plane

  4. sounds like you saw a plane that turned on its landing lights

Almost all modern aircraft are equipped with landing lights if they are intended and approved for nighttime operations. Landing lights are usually of very high intensity because of the considerable distance that may separate an aircraft from terrain or obstacles; the landing lights of large aircraft can easily be seen by observers from several miles away.

In the design of landing lights, key considerations are intensity, reliability, weight, and power consumption. Ideal landing lights are extremely intense, require little electrical power, are lightweight, and have long and predictable service lives. Technologies used in past and present have included ordinary incandescent lamps, halogen lamps, various forms arc lamps and discharge lamps, and LED lamps.

Click on the picture to see them more clearly.Landing lights are typically only useful as visibility aids to the pilots when the aircraft is very low and close to terrain, as during take-off and landing. Landing lights are usually extinguished in cruise flight, especially if atmospheric conditions are likely to cause reflection or glare from the lights back into the eyes of the pilots. However, the brightness of the landing lights makes them useful for increasing the visibility of an aircraft to other pilots, and so pilots are often encouraged to keep their landing lights on while in flight below certain altitudes or in crowded airspaces.

Landing lights are sometimes used in emergencies to communicate with ground personnel or other aircraft, especially if other means of communication are not available (radio failures and the like).

  5. Yes they're planes and they may have turned their lights on before dark because it was foggy, perhaps.

  6. Yes... it was most likely an aircraft, although aircraft do not have yellow lights, only white, red, and green.

One green in the leading edge at the tip of the right wing, one red in the leading edge of the tip of the left wing. (recognition light)

Two strobing white lights on the trailing edge at the tip of both wings. (strobe lights)

One strobing white light on the tail of the aircraft, near the APU (auxilary power unit) exhaust. (strobe lights)

One strobing red light on the belly of the aircraft; turned on whenever the aircraft is moving and/or the engines are on (anti-collison lights)

White lights on the horizontal stabalizer of the aircraft illuminating the tail.  (logo light)

White lights on the sides of the fuselage in front of the wings illuminating the wings. (wing lights)

White lights on the leading edge of the wings and/or on the belly or the plane and/or on the landing gear of the aircraft which illuminate the front of the aircraft whenever the aircraft is below 10,000 feet (usually). (landing lights)

White lights pointing to the sides of the aircrafts illuminating the ground. (runway turnoff lights)

And then there are the obvious lights INSIDE the aircraft...

    I hope I didn't miss any...       :D

  7. Sounds like an airplane. Their landing lights can change colors when going through clouds. They have a rotating red light, and a white light in the rear, plus a red on one side at the end of the wing, and a green one on the other.

At night going in and out of clouds these lights can appear strange.

    Dan

  8. It may be it's landing lights if not i could be the beacon lights. But planes usually have white and red lights not yellow.

Only yellow ones are landing and taxi.

    Hope this helps :D
