The death row inmates escaped by donning homemade guard uniforms with fake badges, then walked out of the prison  & drove off in a car that had been left in visitor parking for them.

That above answer is correct.  He was sentenced to death, but escaped from death room.  He was then killed in a "bar" fight, for not telling his breakout buddies where his family lived.  They wanted to hold Troy Leon Greggs family hostage, who only lived a few miles from where he was murdered.
