  1. No, the Nile runs north-south (look at a map). Upper Egypt was/is the southern end of th River Nile (up stream).  lower Egypt is (by default) the lower (northers) end of the river including the Nile Delta and Cairo.  There are a number of cataracts in the river that mark the general division.  There are/were also cultural divisions between the two (like most countries).
