  1. The city of Berlin was completely inside East Germany, but part of it was controlled by the West. It was surrounded by the Berlin Wall. It was possible for Westerners to go in and out by land, but only (I think) because of an uneasy agreement between East and West. For a while, the East blockaded West Berlin by land, and it was supplied via air (the Berlin Airlift).

  2. Excuse me?

West Germany was a portion of the current country of Germany, which was separated after World War II.  West Germany, or the Federal Republic of Germany, was a separate country from the DDR - The German Democratic Republic, which was under Soviet control.

West Berlin was indeed separated from East Germany by a border - better known as the Berlin Wall.  It was kind of a no-mans' land, not really part of the FDR, not part of the DDR.

  3. There were 2 divisions--East and West Germany

and East and West Berlin (which was located in East Germany). Is an "enclave" like a biscuit or a hard roll ????jk...LOL

  4. I assume you mean "West Berlin".

Technically, no. West Berlin was part of neither the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) nor the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1945 to 1990. However, it was surrounded by East Germany on all sides, and did have close ties to West Germany.

After World War 2, Berlin was separated into four occupation zones. The Russian occupation of East Berlin was unilaterally ended and East Berlin became part of the GDR, but the French, American, and British occupation of West Berlin continued. As a consequence, West Berlin was "almost" part of West Germany: There was joint economy and citizenship, for example. However, delegates from West Berlin were not allowed to vote in the West German parliamentary system, and federal law was not automatically enforceable in West Berlin.

In 1990, East Berlin and West Berlin merged to form the state of Berlin, which then acceded to the Federal Republic of Germany.
