I'm interested in learning a new skill, & I thought not many people these days that I know knit so I was wondering if anyone could help me with step by step guide on how to get started & how to knit then how to finish.

At the moment I'd rather just try my luck at small squares that maybe later on stitched together as a blanket.

  1. Knitting is very popular with fishermen - the real men who fish!

As long time periods are needed, but you can put it away in the middle of things, knitting is a fantastic hobby and something you can do with friends.

There are different types of knitting, including crochet, which require different needles.

  2. I'd start with doing squares about 4"x4" to get used to the needles and different stitches you have to do. Beginners have a problem with adding or dropping extra stitches at the ends of rows and dropped stitches anywhere.

Knitting each row is called a garter stitch.

Knitting one row and purling one row is stockinette.

Knit one stitch, purl one stitch is called a seed stitch or ribbing depending on whether you start the next row with the same stitch or the opposite one.

Counting stitches and rows are important to keep the work in the pattern you're working on.

Lots of knitting lessons on the internet.

  3. I would recommend finding a person to teach you how to knit.  I was taught by my sister, we were both in grade school, and I tried to make a scarf.  Later, in my 20's I took classes at a local yarn shop and I feel the in person help is really a benefit.  Along with the basics, they will help you read patterns, which tend to be written in a knitters code.  Good Luck!!

  4. I can knit but left handed - you maybe able to find something on a website but I would try visiting an old peoples home or similar they will love to have your company and show you how to knit as well.    Good luck

  5. Start with scarves.  You can you tube knitting classes. That is how my daughter taught herself only a month ago and she is making scarf and beanie sets AND people are putting in orders.
