  1. Yes it was.   As an airline Captain, I can tell you that all the other problems mentioned above (ground accidents, engine failures, electrical problems) are simply events which occasionally happen and are dealt with.   They don't count when talking about accidents.  At best, those other things are "incidents."

This was the first ever B777 "accident"

  2. According to the NTSB database (which covers all accidents occurring in the United States and overseas accidents involving US carriers), there haven't been any fatal accidents.  It doesn't look like there has been anything that a layman would call a "crash".  There's all sorts of them where catering truck meets wing, aircraft wheel meets taxiway sign, and passenger meets floor while disregarding the fasten seat belt sign in turbulence.

Go here: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/query.asp and enter 777 under make/model if you want to read it for yourself.

I'm not sure about the history is of operators in other countries.

  3. i don't think so...

  4. No way.

There have been many (this was British's 3rd), just none of them have resulted in any fatalities, and none of the 777s have been damaged enough to be scrapped instead of repaired (though this may be the 1st, its heavily damaged).

The A330/A340 has only had 1 hull loss (maybe 2 now w/ the Iberia A346 in Brazil), and no fatalities. The new planes are getting safer all the time!

  5. Apparently it is, I have read that several times from different sources.

  6. look

  7. not really..... in aviation, an accident has it's own definition. This was the first 777 to "crash", but there have been several cases of 777s having engine or electrical problems. one even had to fly for about 3 hours on one engine after the other failed. all made successful landings with no injuries.

  8. No

  9. Yep, first 777 accident but not the first incident involving the 777 and apparently its a write- off cus of the the landing gear collapsing into the wing. This will also be the first 777 to be written off but not the first 777 to be sent to the junkyard.

  10. Try www.ntsb.gov.

They'll have more info than I can fit in my head.
