Question:

Washer and Dryer ok to sit unused?

We recently moved into a house that included a washer and dryer, but we already have our own. The landlord isn't willing/able to remove the W/D. We plan on living here for approximately 3 years. Will it hurt our washer and dryer to store it in the garage for that long without using them? We really hate to sell them, since we'll likely need it when we do move out in 2 - 3 years, but don't want to damage it. Any info on whether it will damage them , or any tips on how to keep them in good condition while they sit would be appreciated!

  1. They should be ok........if you think that there is moisture coming thru a garage concrete slab, put a piece of plastic under them......so they don't rust up badly........enjoy.

  2. Make sure you keep in inside somewhere. The one time the same thing happened to us, and we left it on the back covered porch. It was only out for 2 weeks and cockroaches moved right in. Then we had to spend extra money on an extermantor!! So just be careful where you store them. Keep them inside somewhere

  3. just don't let it get wet put it in a dry spot and put a sheet over them but that's not fair your land lady won't let you move the other one.See if you could pick at her a little more

  4. If you live in a cold climate, add some RV antifreeze to the washer, beacause no matter what you do there will be water left in the machine.  That way, you won't have any ice forming and cracking the hoses or pump.  Just make sure it's RV antifreeze and not car antifreeze.   It won't take very much and when you hook them back up just run the washer on an empty load prior to use.

  5. No as long as they are in the garage they should be ok. I stored mine for also 3 years when I moved to Dallas, and everything worked out fine. Just keep them dry and out of the weather.

  6. Probably but I would lay the hoses down for a while to let out any water if they are going to get frozen.

  7. The only problem is that the seals might dry up and leak when you go to use them, there might be something to run through the washer before storage, check with a dealer.

  8. My mother-in-law had a washer and dryer sitting in storage for almost 10 years that she gave to us...they're a little outdated but they work just fine!  I would just suggest to cover any openings in the back and remove the power cords if you can for safe keeping just in case mice, bugs, etc. try to get into it and eat the wires.
