Question:

Washing Machine Problems Won't Agitate or Spin?

I have a kenmore washing machine, model from 1980's, it won't agitate or spin. The machine make a terrible humming noise when it does not spin or agitate. To get the washer to agitate, I must turn off the washer, lean it back, and pull the belt to make it rotate, and sit the machine back down. Once I have done that, the machine will agitate. Once it reaches the spin cycle, it makes a similar humming noise, but i do not have to turn the machine off. All i have to do is spin the drum manually and shut the lid and the spin cycle continues. Please help me if you have any ideas on how to fix this problem(s). Thanks!

  1. sounds like your motor is shot. this happened to me too and it was inexpensive to fix. with all the effort you are putting in  each wash day - go splurge and get a new motor. Its abount $150. and you won't need another motor for 5/10 years

  2. You probably need a new pump. Your pumps bearing is wearing out and stalling the motor down. Remove the belt and turn the pump by hand. If it is real hard to turn then that is your problem.

  3. It could also be the clutch. Best thing is to call a repair man. In Atlanta where I live there are several companies that will come out, diagnose the problem and give you a written estimate. They charge $7.95 if you decide not to have it repaired. When I had my clutch replaced it cost $149 and took the guy less than 1 hour. He also had the part with him.

  4. replace the belt, it's worn. or check the spring that retracts the motor, to tighten the belt, it maybe weak. have it replaced. good luck.
