Question:

Washing Maching Filtering into a sink?

The hose from the sink goes directly into the sink. The only filter is a steel pasta looking filter but much finer. A bungee cord goes around the faucet and holds up both ends of this filter. It has worked for a while no problems but is there a better way without replaces all pipes up in an old two story? I thought of this solution and was wondering if there is something less makeshift?

  1. A washing machine must drain into an air gap (it can't be directly connected to a pipe) and the drain discharge should be higher than the water level in the washer tub, otherwise it constantly will gravity drain out of the machine. The setup you have is perfectly sericeable. The only other alternative would be to run a Y from the sink's drain line to about a 3-foot standpipe made out of drain pipe. This could be connected inside a wall to a stud with a 45 degree elbow at the top so it protrudes from the drywall (requires tearing out and replacing the drywall for access). Or you could secure the drain pipe to the wall with strapping material and screws at the studs.

I wouldn't change it unless you really don't like the look of it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  2. you dont want to start messing around changing pipes and plastering walls leave things as they are
