Question:

Washing a piebald cob with alot of mane and tail!!

I am taking my piebald cob to a show at the weekend and need to give him a good wash. He is more white than black and has a really thick white mane and tail. He has some feather on his legs but not much. I've only had him for 3 months and this will be my first time washing him so I'm abit worried about how he will react to water! Can anybody recommend a good routine I can follow? I mean, do I groom him first, how to wash his mane and get it really white, best products to use, etc.

Thanks so much!

  1. A.A. Gaveyou some good advice, I was about to write most of the same asnwer. try to get some warm water and carefull not to spray their face, Ohh and carefull walking behind the horse, you may get kciked.

    Michael...

  2. Never tie him while washing. Hold him while someone else sprays him or the other way around. Always start at his hoofs when bathing. Pick his tail and mane. Grab around 3 hairs at a time and separate them from the rest. Keep doing it until your finished. It works better than brushing because your dont pull like 500 hairs out.

I would use mane n' tail conditionar too!!

    Good Luck!

    Sounds ADORABLE!!!!!!!

    Hope  I helped a lot!! :) ♥

  3. sounds like my daughters pony!

There is no short cut here, the mane and tail are going to need careful time consuming combing, we found the John Whittaker comb the best for this job.

Then as for shampooing, try cowboy magic, it makes the white bits really shiney.

Good luck, and fingers crossed he doesn't poo in the way to the show!

  4. well first off when you spray him with the hose start from his legs and then go up to his shoulder then barrel etc etc but wen u start from the legs the cold water isnt such a shock and id say its best to give him a good brush and curry first and pick his feet and put on som hoof polsih first so water doesnt get in his hooves. also you can go to www.doversaddlery.com and get a product called blue ribbon and they hav a shamopp made specially for white horses to get them really white and clean.and MOST IMPORTIANT do NOT spray him in the face with water sooo many ppl i know do this and it causes your horse to be head shy so get a rag and wipe it off that way i wouldnt put shampoo on his face though...if u want to put a little on the rag tho and then make sure to get ot all off its fine just dont put too much cuz it will b harder to get off with a rag

good luck @ ur show! =]]

  5. I always brush my horses down before I bathe them. I get all of the tangles out of their mane and tail, and a good thorough brushing. When you bathe, Always start with the legs, and work your way up. He will more than likely dance around a bit, especially if the water is cold. Reassure him by talking to him, and continue.

I have found that a shampoo called "Show Clean" made by Absorbine...the same people that make "Show Sheen", works great on white!! Rub it on, and if there is white in the mane/tail/feathers, let it sit for about 5 min, then rinse it out. You might want to consider a conditioner for the long mane and tail, and some Show Sheen to help with detangle and shine.
