Washing machine agitator won't turn, and a loud grind sound when basket/tub moves?

Druing the washing machine cycle, the agitator will not spibn and there is a loud grind sound, particularly when the basket/tub hits the front left portion of the washing machine. I can feel and hear where the grind starts and ends. Any idea what this could be?

ours did something similar, and the motor was shot.  this may be a little more than your ready for, but some washers will tell you what is wrong with them.  if you look on the back, there should be a piece of paper folded and inserted somewhere in your washer.  on the bottom should be some codes, now take off the front of the washer (make sure it's unplugged so that you don't mistaking touch anything that could hurt you) then plug it back in.  if your washer is that type, it should blink a series of lights, or differently timed flashes.  look on the bottom at the motor.  there should be a key at the bottom of that piece of paper.  i saw our repairman do it and he told me what to do.  good luck

Did you take all the packing material out? Bolts, straps, and brackets.
