Washing machine has stopped during cycle and won't work?

Hi there. I have a fairly old Hotpoint "800 Electronic 9576" washing machine. A couple of times now, it has stopped midway through its cycle for no reason, and I have been unable to take my washing out because the door is locked. I have rectified this by turning the dial to a "quick spin program" or something like that. The washing machine starts up and then gets to the end of a cycle.

But today, it has stopped near to the end of it's cycle, just before the last spin and I can't get it going again. I have turned the dial but the washing machine is completely unresponsive. I cannot hear sound coming out of it and I can't get it going again. It is like it has just died. My washing is stuck inside because the door is locked.

What can I do?

PS: I have checked my fuse box and it all seems in order. I haven't had an electricity cut or anything.

  1. Sounds like the points in the timer have burned off enough to where they will no longer make contact hence you can't get it to do anything. A new Timer will fix it now you need to decide if you want to fix or replace it.

  2. Well, it may finally have died. Have you tried unplugging it, letting it sit a couple minutes, then plugging it back in again? If that doesn't work, I would call a washing machine repairman on the phone, and see if he would give you advice over the phone without coming out. You may have to call a couple places, but I'm sure you could find someone that would give you a couple tips to try. When you get your washing out, I think it's time to buy a new machine. It's been giving you hints that this day was coming. Good luck!

  3. I agree its likely the timer.  If your washer is over 10 years old you will be dollars ahead to replace it rather than repair it.  The energy efficiency of today's washers is such that the savings on power use will be greater than the cost of a new washer in just a few years (it depends on how often it is used).  In additions a repairman to come out and repair the washer is going to cost over $100 dollars and he is also likely to find other problems that need repair now.
