Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins join hands in fundraiser for KHL Team families -NHL Update
The National Hockey League (NHL) and its players might just be some of the most entertaining and exciting in the world, but that does not mean they are not up to take responsibility along with giving back to the community.
Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins became trendsetters by announcing their partnership in raising funds for the families of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) plane crash victims in which the entire Yaroslavl Lokomotiv team was wiped out.
Putting their rivalry on hold in a rare happening, both teams have committed themselves to doing specific things in order to raise money and donate it to the heirs of the people who lost their lives in the plane crash which put the whole hockey world into
a state of shock.
"The tragic plane crash involving Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League has affected the entire hockey community", said Capitals Vice President and General Manager, George McPhee. "We agreed that this was a great opportunity for both clubs
to work together to raise money for all involved in this unfortunate loss".
The most notable Russian players of both teams which are without a doubt, Alex Ovechkin of Washington Capitals and Evgeni Malkin of Pittsburgh Penguins, will be participating in a ceremonial opening faceoff during the matchup in-between their teams.
Players will also wear special jerseys with commemorative Lokomotiv patches at their game on October 13 to show their support followed signing them and auctioning them on the NHL’s official website.
Wives and girlfriends of Washington and Pittsburgh players will also be participating in the fundraiser by selling remembrance bracelets.
These various events will be taking place on October 8 at Washington Capitals home stadium followed by Pittsburgh Penguins on October 13, in their season-opener against Carolina Hurricanes.
The commencement of such events could come only by the players who can feel what it would be like if their families were to lose them. Before the focus was more on the players who were lost on that gloomy day of September 7, but now it has gradually moved
to their grieving families to show that the NHL is always there to support them.
