Washington Capitals Brooks Laich set to play in Switzerland -NHL Update
According to insider information on the Washington Post, it seems like Washington Capitals top rated forward, Brooks Laich, is also gearing up to leave North America and head out in view of the lockout and work stoppage to continue playing hockey next season.
While there is no guessing at whether the next scheduled regular season will be locked out or if the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players Association will be able to work something out just yet, NHLers have already begun to make their move and secure
a contract with teams around Russia, Germany and Switzerland.
Quietly, Brooks Laich is reported to have left already and is already in Switzerland by now according to his agent, Roland Thompson. It was also revealed by his agent that Laich has not signed a contract as of yet, but could be doing so at anytime in the
upcoming days, and most likely by the end of this week.
“They want to play, they want to be ready when the season starts,” Thompson said in a phone interview with the Washington Post. “To sit around, it drives them crazy. It’s not about the money or anything like that. He’s just trying to stay in shape and to
play the game that he loves.”
“He’s trained all summer, he’s committed to being ready,” Thompson added. “Having to go through this drudgery of going to the rink with just two, three guys to prepare for something that may not happen is tough. He wants to go to practice every day with
a purpose.”
Laich, a 29-year-old centre from Wawota, Saskatchewan, Canada, was drafted by the Ottawa Senators as the 193rd overall back in round-six of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He has played a total of 557 games in the major league up until now and has 278
points (116 goals, 162 assists).
These past two seasons had been a little slow for the veteran, who usually scores nearly 60 a season, but Laich has been working hard and does want to turnaround for his team at the next chance he gets. With a lockout in play now, there is no telling where
and how Laich will perform for the next hockey year.
