Washington Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin ready to amaze next season –NHL Update
Washington Capitals have high interests vested in their 25-year-old captain, Alex Ovechkin, who is easily considered one of the best hockey players to have ever graced the ice in the National Hockey League (NHL), but with his lowest score ever last season,
speculations arose to whether he was the same as when he was drafted first overall and began scoring 100 plus points or not.
The 2010-2011 season is a time which Ovechkin surely wishes to forget and put behind him as he managed to score only 85 points (32 goals, 53 assists), a record which might seem high compared to other players around the league, but according to Ovechkin’s
standards, it was pretty low.
In his first season, the Russian sensation potted 106 points (52 goals, 54 assists) to woo and wow the league and saw a career high of 112 points (65 goals, 47 assists) the following season after the next. Averaging 100 plus points every season and suddenly
dropping down to 85 surely brings along with it much rumouring, including places where Ovechkin was mentioned to have gained a substantial amount of weight, resulting in his decreased performance.
Now after spending a lot of time on his conditioning and playing, Ovechkin believes that he is healthier than ever.
"But my body is perfect right now. You can ask [strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish] -- he'll tell you. It was a pretty interesting moment for me, because it's never happened to me when people said I'm in bad shape", Ovechkin said.
Having changed his personal trainer; it seems that Ovechkin just might have made the right decision at the right time, something which is certainly not going unnoticed.
"Alex is our captain and he's here early. He looks to be really in great shape", Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said. "He tried something different last year. He wanted to work his way into shape so that he was peaking during the playoffs. He is going to try
something different this year”.
Having made the playoffs for four straight years, Ovechkin is hoping of finally making it count with a Stanley Cup championship when the new season kicks off in October.
