Washington Capitals GM George McPhee unmoved by Alexander Semin's UFA status -NHL Update
When Washington Capitals’ general manager, George McPhee, was asked about how he felt with Alexander Semin still being a free agent, to the surprise of many, the top-level executive was not moved by the news at all.
Talking to CSN Washington’s Chuck Gormley, McPhee was “Not Necessarily” surprised when it came to a player like Alexander Semin, who did not opt to re-sign with Washington Capitals, still be available on the market.
Re-signing him now is probably not on McPhee’s mind, but there was no concrete answer from the general manager in that regard.
“I’ve never really discussed that sort of thing, whether we’re going to sign someone or not,” McPhee said. “I’d rather not start now. I know that’s not a great answer, but I’ll just stay neutral.”
Some even believe that Semin, not being able to secure a contract up until now, will probably go forth with an offer he is getting from the Russian, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Due to all the pain of going to constant negotiations with teams around
the National Hockey League (NHL), Semin might just go for something he already has, in Russia.
Semin is definitely one of the most dynamic players in the league today but it certainly does appear that 2011-2012 was the last season with Washington. He was on a one-year, $6.7 million contract and scoring another deal like that now would be near to impossible.
The Russian native was drafted as the 13th overall back in round-one of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by Washington Capitals. He spent seven straight seasons with his original team and has not been on another club as of yet.
In a total of 469 games played through his career up until now, the veteran has 408 points (197 goals, 211 assists) with 450 minutes in penalty time.
He was the second to go for Washington Capitals after Calgary Flames signed unrestricted free agent Dennis Wideman and most recently, Mike Green has also been reported of declining a qualifying tender from the club due to it being too short of a deal.
Updates on Alexander Semin should be expected in the upcoming days.
