Washington Capitals achieve a 2-1 win against New York Islanders
One of the important games of Thursday was the New York Islanders playing host to the Washington Capitals. Both teams had different reasons going into the match hoping for a win. The Washington Capitals looked to close the gap on the leaders while the New
York Islanders looked to avoid a last place finishing with New Jersey Devils catching up fast.
The match was pretty much evenly matched but a defensive error in the second period cost the New York Islanders the game as Washington Capitals emerged as 2-1 winners of the match. Nicklas Backstrom was named the star selection of the match as he scored
one goal and made the other for Jason Chimera.
The period started off with the Washington Capitals dominating possession and firing shots on goal. However, New York Islanders were able to neutralize this as they started to come up with attacks too. The game started to move on swiftly with Washington
Capitals stepping up the pace and taking the lead with a goal in the 4th minute.
The goal was scored by a brilliant tip in shot by Jason Chimera. After taking the lead, the Washington Capitals kept on piling pressure but they failed to score any further goals. On the other hand, New York Islanders started to get strong as the period
neared its end. Brilliant passing and attacks were seen developing for the Islanders.
The period ended with the Washington Capitals leading 1-0 at the interval as they made 9 goal attempts while the New York Islanders made 11 goal attempts.
The second half saw Washington Capitals making a brilliant start once again. They attacked and didn’t give the Islanders any space to settle. With the strong pieces of play they developed, the Washington Capitals doubled their lead with another goal scored
by Niclas Backstrom in the 4th minute from a superb backhand shot.
New York Islanders were able to keep up with the Capitals as they came up with attacks as well. The brilliance in passing and attacking resulted in the New York Islanders comprehensively beating the Capitals' defence to score through Michael Grabner from
a backhand shot. The lead was cut to just one goal which made the match all the more exciting.
The period ended with a few more goal attempts made by both teams but without any success. Washington Capitals led 2-1 at the end of the period. The period saw Capitals making 9 goal attempts while the New York Islanders made 7 goal attempts.
The final period of the match saw both teams coming out and displaying a lot of patience as they waited for spaces to develop. Though there were chances but they were difficult to score of. The period saw no goals being scored with the Islanders making 7
goal attempts and the Capitals making 6 goal attempts. Consequently, Washington Capitals won the match 2-1 in the end.
