Washington Capitals annihilate Detroit Red Wings 7-1, stay perfect -NHL Match Update
Washington Capitals stayed perfect in their seven game winning streak since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off with a huge win over the Detroit Red Wings, 7-1, Saturday night, October 22, at the sold-out Verizon Center in
Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
Mike Green had a fantastic performance by picking up four points (2 goals, 2 assists) throughout the matchup, followed by Mathieu Perreault who had two goals as well. Their veteran goalie, Tomas Vokoun had another amazing night by blocking 32 of 33 shots
for a near shutout, as compared to his counterpart on the Detroit side, Ty Conklin, who fell short on 7 out of a total 25.
"It shows that we got a lot of depth and everyone can score every night", Perreault said. "It makes our team pretty tough to play against. You got to get out there with four lines ready to go every night because our four lines are ready to go every night.
It feels pretty good right now".
Detroit was also perfect before facing the Capitals by having won five straight against big teams like Colorado and Vancouver, but lost their first to Washington to snap their winning streak, making it the second time in NHL history that two perfect teams
with at least a 5-0 record facing off.
Green took opportunity of their first power play opportunity as Detroit’s Todd Bertuzzi was charged with boarding. Marcus Johansson extended the lead to 2-0, 1:01 later for his fourth of the season.
Cory Emmerton went out for high-sticking with a minor, giving Mike Green another chance which he capitalised on for his second and final of the match.
Niklas Kronwall finally put Detroit on the scoreboard with his first of the season during one of four power play opportunities given by Washington but Perreault broke the momentum by scoring with eight seconds remaining in the second.
The third period was all Washington as Joel Ward, Mathieu Perreault and Nicklas Backstrom scored three straight to secure their seventh straight victory.
At the moment, Washington leads the league with 14 points and hopes to gain four more when they face-off against Edmonton Oilers on Thursday and Vancouver Canucks on Saturday to end the month.
Red Wings play another road game against Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
