Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin signs with native Dynamo Moscow -NHL Update
Alex Ovechkin has finally made up his mind and chose to sign with Dynamo Moscow, his native hockey franchise in the Russian, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), after reports had emerged just a few days back.
The captain of the Washington Capitals club cited the lockout in the National Hockey League (NHL) to be the clear reason as to have forced him into making this decision along with terming Dynamo a club where he might continue to stay if a new labour deal
would mean a cut in their current contracts in North America.
Ovechkin is one of the few players who actually came on camera and let the world know how they felt about the persisting situation in the league and what kind of affect it could possibly have, not only on fans, but the sport in general in days to come.
Taking to the Washington Times and Washington Post on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, Alex Ovechkin was of the view that the Players’ Association would continue to fight for its rights and with the NHL not planning to move from their stance either, the lockout
could last much longer than everyone had expected in the past.
"If it's goanna be the same situation (as 2004-05), I think it's all gonna be all year because we're not goanna give up," Ovechkin said in that conference call.
Prior to joining Dynamo Moscow, team president Arkady Rotenberg had made a surprising comment of the potential signing of Alex Ovechkin by regarding it to be “no prestige” for the club, which also gave birth to rumours of the captain unwilling to join a
club like that. Nevertheless, Ovechkin chose to go where he started off with his hockey career and let go of that statement.
“It didn’t vex me that much, but it was unpleasant to hear,” the Washington Capitals star told R-Sport. “Every situation changes for better or worse, someone might have said something, someone might have translated something not too well, so I never take
offence at such things.”
Alex Ovechkin is one of the leading players of the NHL and not having him on the club will definitely be devastating as the Washington Capitals may permanently lose the face of their organisation.
