Washington Capitals continue winning; dominate Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 -NHL Match Update
Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks might have disturbed Washington’s winning streak but it did not faze the Capitals who improved their record to, 9-2, since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off, defeating the Carolina
Hurricanes, 5-1, Friday night at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States.
Outshooting Carolina was another contributing factor in Washington’s win over the Hurricanes, 32-25, along with Michal Neuvirth remaining focused in the net after letting only one through the whole game.
Carolina was down by only one entering the third period but an offensive outburst by the Capitals ultimately got the job done.
“It was 2-1 going into the third and we were sort of lucky to be there", said Hurricanes defenseman, Bryan Allen. "Then we gave them too many chances in the third. We’ve got to realize we’ve got enough offense to come back in those situations. We sort of
unravelled".
Anthony Stewart inaugurated the scoring with his third of the season 3:26 into the first period.
Washington dominated the next 40 minutes as Jeff Halpern and Troy Brouwer scored two straight nearly a minute apart and also managed to kill off three straight penalties in the remaining minutes.
John Carlson took advantage of their third power play opportunity of the match as Carolina’s, Tuomo Ruutu, was booked for boarding and awarded a two-minute minor penalty, 2:02 into the third.
19-year-old Washington rookie, Cody Eakin, finally scored his first of the season midway through after getting his first career assist in the second, which was truly a sigh of relief for the youngster.
"I didn't see him celebrate crazy (on the ice), but he's going to be a great player", Ovechkin said. "He has unbelievable skill, and you can see how easy he put the puck in the net".
Nicklas Backstrom secured the match with his fifth of the season with less than five minutes remaining to play in the final period, giving Alex Ovechkin his second assist of the night.
Washington Capitals have one more road game against the New York Islanders on Saturday, while the Carolina Hurricanes play their next by hosting the Dallas Stars on Sunday.
