Washington Capitals defeat the Montreal Canadiens 2-0 – NHL Recap

The Washington Capitals came up with a 2-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens at the Centre Bell Arena this past Saturday. The game saw the Capitals looking for a win to move into the lead of the National Hockey League Eastern Conference while the Canadiens
hoped to win and score crucial points in their hopes of keeping the sixth position in the standings.
The game started with Capitals strong on the offence that resulted in them scoring in the first period. The goal was the lone goal of the period which saw the Capitals leading. The second period saw both teams coming up with quite a few shots on goal, but
none of them found the back of the net. The final period was again evenly matched by the two teams, but the Capitals scored their second goal of the game to win 2-0 in the end. Carey Price, goal-keeper of the Canadiens was named the Star of the Game for his
impressive 31 saves performance.
The Capitals, despite the away disadvantage, started the game with a tremendous amount of confidence. It looked as if they were playing on home ice. They were able to capitalise from the strong start, as they scored in the second minute to get into the lead.
The goal was scored by Marco Sturm from a brilliant flick-shot. The defence of the Capitals was also superb during the course of the period that restricted the opposition to almost nothing. There were several chances for the offence of the Capitals, but
they could not get the final touch that would put them in the comfortable lead.
The Capitals comprehensively beat the Canadiens in every department but were not able to score goals. The period ended with the Capitals leading by a slender one goal margin. During the course of the period, the Capitals made 12 shots on goal while the Canadiens
managed just three attempts.
The second period saw the Canadiens coming out a little stronger on the offence, but the story remained the same, as the Capitals controlled the pace of the game. They attacked and slowed down the pace of the game at will.
The period saw the Capitals coming up with 14 shots on goal while the Canadiens made 8 shots, but none of the 22 shots were converted into goals and the Capitals still led by a single goal.
The final 20 minutes of play saw both teams almost even, as they both made seven shots on goal each, but it was the Capitals who scored the lone goal of the period in the 17th minute.
The goal that also doubled their lead was scored by Alexander Semin from a well placed flick-shot, as the Capitals won the game 2-0 in the end.
