Washington Capitals defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 after shootout – NHL Recap
The Washington Capitals beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 at the St. Pete Times Forum on Monday. The game was very important for both teams as the Capitals were leading the Lightning by a single point in the National Hockey League Southeast Division. A win
for either of the teams would put them in the Division lead.
The game started on the slower side, but the home team managed to score to take the lead at the end of the first period. The Capitals came up with some strong plays and scored in the final period to level the scores. The game went into over-time as the scores
were level 1-1 at the end of the regulation time. During over-time no goals were scored despite some strong shots on goal. However, the Capitals emerged as 2-1 winners of the game after shootout.
Both teams made a decent start to the game that saw them coming up with some strong plays and shots on goal. There were several chances for both teams to score early on, but this did not happen early. With the passage of time, both teams gained in confidence
and created chances for themselves regularly.
The Lightning came across a power play which resulted in the Lightning scoring in the 13th minute to get into the lead. The goal was scored by Sean Bergenheim from a well placed flick shot.
The second period started off slow, but the home team was able to step up the pace, as they started to fire shots on goal and displayed some excellent passing abilities. It did not take too long for the Lightning to come up with strong plays as well.
The game turned into an offensive battle that was contested strongly by both teams. There were several easy chances for each team to score, but unfortunately none of the shots found the back of the net. The period ended with the Lightning still leading 1-0.
The final 20 minutes of play were on the slower side and the period saw both teams coming out with strong defence. Though there were chances for either of the teams to get into the lead, but this did not happen during the early part of the period.
The Capitals created a brilliant play in the 15th minute that saw them scoring through Alexander Semin from a well placed shot which levelled the scores. The period and the game ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the course of the period
the Capitals made 3 shots on goal, as the Lightning made four.
The game went into over-time, but neither of the teams was able to score. However, after the shootout it was the Capitals who won the game 2-1 in the end.
