Washington Capitals defy all odds by eliminating Boston Bruins in Game 7 in OT 2-1 -NHL Playoffs Update
What a breathtaking match it certainly was as Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins faced off to save face and pride in Game 7 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Playoff Quarterfinals.
Capitals’ goalie, Braden Holtby, kept the intensity at its peak throughout the match as he did not flinch at any single moment, leading the Washington team into overtime and a game-winner by Joel Ward secured their fate at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts,
on Wednesday night, April 25, 2012, in overtime.
It was definitely a big hurdle crossed by Washington, beating out the defending Stanley Cup champions, and confirming that there will be a new team crowned at the end of the postseason.
"It's a nice sense of accomplishment to be able to get over the hump," Capitals defenseman, Karl Alzner, said. "It's nice to turn the page, and maybe we're writing a new script."
Matt Hendricks kicked off the scoring with his first of the series to give Washington the one point lead as he snapped it from the right from a tough angle as it crossed Boston goalie, Tim Thomas, for the goal.
Washington would have gotten the shutout had it not been for Tyler Seguin who tipped in a loose puck with his stick while on the ice behind Braden Holtby to level it and force the overtime decider.
Ward capped it off 2:57 into overtime on a rebound after Mike Knuble’s shot failed to get through Tim Thomas for the win, stunning the baffled Boston crowd.
"I went for a change and [Knuble] made a big block there and I assumed we had a little bit of a break up ice so try and take a chance," Ward said. "I knew he was going to take it to the rack and I just tried to follow it up as best I could. You know, I just
saw the puck laying there and I just took a whack at it and it went in."
Washington is now in the semi-finals and will wait for Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers to play it out in Game 7 to see who they will be facing in the next round.
