Washington Capitals emerge as 2-1 winners against the New York Islanders after overtime
The second game of Tuesday was hosted by the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Centre as they played host to the New York Islanders.
Teams are catching up on the Capitals and they needed two points for moving out of this tight battle while the Islanders looked for a win just as a consolation as they are out of contention for the play-offs.
The first 20 minutes of play ended goal less while the Islanders took the lead in the second period and led as the final period started.
The game looked all but over but the Capitals scored in the final minute of the game to level the scores.
Consequently, the game went into overtime from where the Capitals emerged as 2-1 winners of the game.
Captain of the Capitals, Alex Ovechkin was named the star of the game for scoring the winning goal.
Both teams made a decent start to the game which saw them attacking and firing shots on goal every now and then.
Some brilliant pieces of plays were constructed during the course of the period but neither of the teams was able to score any goals.
With the passage of time the attacks got better and better but unfortunately still there were no goals during the 20 minutes of play.
The period ended with the scores deadlocked on 0-0. During the course of the period, the Capitals made 11 goal attempts while the Islanders made 7 goal attempts.
The Capitals were definitely the stronger of the two teams at the start of the period as they controlled the pace of the game. However, all of their men were involved in attacks as the Capitals were on the offence.
Unfortunately, the home team was caught on a counter attack which resulted in the Islanders taking the lead. The goal was scored by Matt Moulson from a quick fired shot that left the goal keeper with no chance of stopping it.
Despite the fact the Capitals were the more productive of the two teams when it came to shots during the period, but still they weren’t able to score any goals.
The period ended with the Islanders leading 1-0 as they made just six goal attempts while the Capitals made 17 shots on goal.
The final period had everything in it, the passing and the shooting but once again it lacked goals.
Both teams were very strong on the offence and defence was also up to the mark. it looked as if the Islanders would win the game but unfortunately for the away side, the Capitals scored right at the end of the game.
The saviour in this case was Brooks Laich for the Capitals who scored through a well placed flick shot in the final minute.
The period ended with the Capitals making 12 goal attempts while the Islanders made 15 goal attempts and the scores level on 1-1.
The game went into overtime as a result, where Alex Ovechkin scored in the 2nd minute from a brilliant backhand shot to win the game by 3-2 for Capitals in the end.
