Washington Capitals’ exit from NHL: Int’l players join home country teams in IIHF event-NHL News
Following their exit from the National Hockey League (NHL) Eastern Conference semi-finals, Washington Capitals’ players have made themselves available to their respective home country teams for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s world championships,
currently underway in Sweden and Finland, simultaneously.
The notable among them are forwards, Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin, both from Russia, who has the perfect record of 6-0-0 in the tournament.
Russian Hockey Federation President, Vladislav Tretiak, announced on Sunday, May 13, 2012, that both players were going to join the team before the quarterfinals.
Ovechkin and Semin were the leading scorers for Capitals but the team was unlucky to not being able to hold out against the New York Rangers in Game 7 of playoff semi-finals series.
Russians, on the other hand, were victorious against Czech Republic on Sunday as they extended their undefeated streak.
The joining of those two players comes as a good development at the right time. They are expected to add to the team’s victories chances.
RHF Executive Director, Valeri Fesyuk, told the Russian state newswire, RIA Novosti:
"We're doing all the documents, solving the issue of insurance and we expect them in Stockholm on the 16th for the quarterfinal. Obviously these two players seriously strengthen our team."
Meanwhile, Swedish centre, Nicklas Backstrom, will be joining his home country team from Tuesday, May 15.
However, the team has only a game left in the preliminary phase of the tournament, which they are going to play against Latvia.
The player was a part of the team in 2006 when it won the gold medal in the championships. It was played in Latvia, and Backstrom was only 18 years old then.
Patric Hornqvist, the winger from the Nashville Predators, is also expected to join his Swedish teammates before the next game, as announced by the team.
Previously, the player has represented the Swedish team in the Winter Olympics of 2010. Even before that, he has played the world championships twice, in 2007 and 2008.
So, he has a plenty of experience of playing at the international stage. His participation is going to be crucial to the Swedish team’s performance.
