Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau foretells better captaincy by Alex Ovechkin next season
Washington Capitals have easily become one of the most overrated teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) after gaining the number one spot in the Eastern Conference during the last regular season, only to lose to Tampa Bay Lightning in four straight losses
during round-two of the playoffs.
Postseason loss is one thing, but losing to a fifth seed team in a clean four game sweep is another level of embarrassment altogether. Not only has the team lost its credibility as it failed to impress after the second back-to-back year something like this
has happened, but also degraded Alex Ovechkin in the process as well.
According to Washington Capitals head coach, Bruce Bourdreau, there will be significant change in October, when the new regular season kicks off.
“The whole leadership role is taking on a different [meaning] to him now”, Boudreau said on Sunday. “We're not all 22-year-old guys anymore. He's the captain. I think he's a great captain on the ice because no one works as hard as him, and no one wants to
win more than him”.
Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals All-Star player which they selected as the first overall pick in round-one of the 2004 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, put up an extraordinary performance last season, but it still was not enough, which gives
birth to a new theory about leadership.
Even though he scored 85 points (32 goals, 53 assists) in 79 games played and registered a plus-minus rating of 24, the 25-year-old is lacking true leadership skills, which are critical in guiding a team to greatness.
Ovechkin will be entering his seventh season as a player on the Washington Capitals roster and it will certainly be a decisive one for him along with the entire team.
“I fully expect Alex Ovechkin to come back into [training] camp mean as a bear”, Bourdreau added. “I’m sure — and it’s well documented — that individually for him, he took more criticism at the end of last year for his totals in goals and points, and not
being up for the Hart, and not being up for other awards”.
Alex Ovechkin is certainly one of the greatest well-rounded players the league has ever since, and going further to truly be called a champion is really what everyone wants.
