Washington Capitals prospects Mathieu Perreault, Cody Eakin hopeful for spot on team -NHL Update
It is not hard to see that Washington Capitals have more than the average number of players who aspire to make the team during this time of the year as training camps and preseason matchups are in full throttle.
Mathieu Perreault and Cody Eakin are two prospects are perfect examples of talented players who are working hard towards making their spot on a National Hockey League (NHL). They might not make it the first time, but following the principle of try, try again,
these two aspiring players are hopeful that their hard work will eventually payoff.
"You are always looking to see where you might be able to fit, but you can't really control what other guys are going to do", Perreault said. "I can only control what I'm going to do, and hopefully that will be good enough to stay here".
Hailing from Drummondville, Quebec, Canada, Perrault was drafted as the 177th overall draft pick during round-six of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by Washington. He has played with his original draft team in a number of matchups during the past two
seasons, but still is yet to lock up a permanent spot.
Using him more like a recall from their minor league affiliates, Hershey Bears, in the American Hockey League (AHL), the 23-year-old has potted 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 56 games so far.
Last season, the centre was allowed to play a career high of 35 matchups, but will have to prove to the management during that time that he can handle being a go-to player.
Cody Eakin, on the other hand, still might be young and better off in the minor leagues at the age of 20, but seeing him play gives the impression that it might not be bad to induct him after all.
"I think you have to come into camp with a little swagger and that can carry you a long way", Eakin said. "It's not necessarily a cockiness, but just know that it is there to be picked and I could be the guy who they choose to do it".
A number of years in the minor leagues and having played for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships, Cody Eakin just might be selected with a little bit of good luck.
