Washington Capitals rally in third to override Ottawa Senators 5-3 -NHL Update
Washington might not have been the best team ever since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off, but the same also goes for Ottawa. After being down entering the third and final period, the Capitals rallied by scoring four in
the last 20 minutes alone to override the Senators, 5-3, Wednesday night, December 7, 2011, at the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
With the extra two points, Washington and Ottawa now stand tied for the number eighth spot in the Eastern Conference with 29 points each.
"The way he was playing tonight, you could tell one was coming for him, and we're glad it did," Washington centre, Troy Brouwer said talking Alex Ovechkin. "He's our star player, and we need him to be like that. He set the tone early, had a couple of good
shifts, you could see he had that desire to score tonight. He's still got to continue with it, one goal isn't going to change a season and he knows that – he wants to score every game. He wants to lead this team every night. Hopefully tonight will give him
a little bit of confidence."
Jeff Halpern gave Washington a one point lead entering the first two minutes of the second period, but the joy was half lived as Ottawa came back to counter with two straight as Erik Condra and Nick Foligno gave the Senators the lead entering the final 20
minutes of regulation.
As the stakes looked high entering the third period, Washington did not let it affect their game plan as Nicklas Backstrom scored his first of the night nearly midway through during the power play opportunity followed by captain, Alex Ovechkin and Troy Brouwer
for three straight with six minutes left.
Milan Michalek attempted at bringing Ottawa back into the match with his power play goal at the 16:08 mark as the Senators remained behind by only one now but as John Carlson made the game-winner at the 19:14 mark to secure the match for the visiting team.
Washington  has the next at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.
