Washington Capitals rookies get morale boost as Alex Ovechkin drops by on first day of camp
Which aspiring hockey player that dreams of becoming like some of the greats that have graced the National Hockey League (NHL) on the ice would not want someone like Alex Ovechkin dropping by when practicing for a spot on the team.
That is exactly what happened on the first day of rookie camp, Sunday morning, as Alex Ovechkin paid a morale boosting visit to the young participants which without a doubt had them in disbelief throughout the time he had been skating with them.
Washington Capitals' head coach, Bruce Boudreau, could certainly relate with what each and every prospect might be feeling at that moment.
“If I’m one of the young guys and I’m seeing Alex Ovechkin and I haven’t skated with him and you see a man that’s like that on the ice, it’s a pretty big ‘wow’ factor”, Boudreau said. “And seeing a guy take direction like he did and do what he was supposed
to be doing and not have any errors about him, I think it might have something to do with how hard they worked”.
The biggest part for them was not only having seen Ovechkin and interacting with one of hockey’s biggest players but it probably was how truly participated in nearly half of the drills with them that day.
Being a captain, Ovechkin knows what he has to do.
“I don’t have to say, ‘Come on, guys; we have to do this and that”, Ovechkin said. “I have to show them, because I’m one of the leaders of the team”.
Being a 100 plus point scorer, Alex Ovechkin is easily one of the best players to ever have played ice hockey in the NHL. At the age of 25, he has established himself as the teams’ captain along with leading them back-to-back in their conquest of the Eastern
Conference.
Even though regular training camp, in which the entire team will participate, does not begin until this upcoming Saturday, Ovechkin is working and training to improve his abilities overall as they will try and take that Eastern Conference top spot even further
with a Stanley Cup run.
