Washington Capitals sign forward Troy Brouwer to two-year, $4.7 million contract –NHL Update
After acquiring left winger, Troy Brouwer, from Chicago Blackhawks during the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft in place of a 26th, first-round pick, Washington Capitals signed Brouwer on Wednesday, to a two-year, $4.7 million contract.
At the time of the draft, as Washington acquired Brouwer , Capitals' general manager, George McPhee, was especially ecstatic at the occasion.
“Even if this was a better draft, this is the kind of guy you would like to insert into your lineup”, McPhee said after formalising the trade. “He’s a power forward who can get us 20 goals a year and play physical. He just won a Stanley Cup a year ago and
is supposed to be a real good leader. We’re delighted to be able to add that to our lineup”.
Brouwer hails from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and was drafted as the 214th overall pick in round-seven of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by Chicago.
He continued to play with Chicago for the next five seasons, and was also part of their 2010 Stanley Cup winning team.
In total, Brouwer, has played 238 games in the NHL from 2006 up until the 2011 season, in which he recorded a total of 103 points (49 goals, 54 assists).
His career high statistics came during Chicago’s Stanley Cup stretch in which he put up 40 points (22 goals, 18 assists) over 78 games played along with eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) in 19 playoff games during the 2010 NHL Playoffs.
Washington has remained on top of the Eastern Conference for a few seasons, but their playoff performance has seen better days. In a move to change all that for the better, Washington has begun the process of hiring new and better players to change their
reputation as the early going team.
They certainly have the firepower, but it depends on how they are willing to use and mix it up for a better result.
Brouwer is surely one of those players that provide a physical depth to the team and can take more shots and hits. His contribution will be valuable for a team who gets eliminated early on into the playoffs.
