Washington Capitals sign their first-round pick in NHL draft Tom Wilson for three years
Last week Washington Capitals had signed their 11th pick in the first round of National Hockey League (NHL) draft, Filip Forsberg for three years and now they have signed the other one, Tom Wilson. 18-year-old Wilson was 16th in the
first round of the NHL last month.
The entry-level deal is for three-years in which Wilson will be given $832,500 for playing in the NHL and $70,000 for playing in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he would most probably play for Washington Capitals’ affiliates, the Hershey Bears.
The 6-foot-4 tall, 205 pound left winger, made his presence felt in the Capitals’ development camp with some amazing display of hockey and made Capitals realise, he is what they want. This was the thing about Wilson that at the end of the week long development
camp, made General Manager George McPhee so happy.
Former New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers player and now the general manager of Washington Capitals for last 15 years, McPhee said about Tom Wilson that,
“He is what we were looking for when we drafted him. He’s a big, strong kid that really competes. Boy, the first three or four shifts of the opening scrimmage earlier in the week I was worried that if he did that all week we’d only have two or three players
left on the ice. But we got him to settle down a little bit and protect everybody else for the rest of the week. We like him a lot, great kid, character. He’s going to be a pretty effective player.”
George McPhee knows that 18-year-old is strong and fit but he hopes that he develops into a top player in years to come. He wants left winger to become a top six guy, go back to juniors and score some 25, 30 goals and develop. One thing that McPhee does
not want from Toronto, Canada born player is, to become a survivor, like most of the other guys who are thrown in too early.
Tom Wilson had won gold with team Ontario at the world under-17 hockey challenge 2011. He played last two seasons with Plymouth Whalers in Ontario Hockey League (OHL), scoring 12 goals, 21 assists and 33 points in 77 games played for OHL side.
