Washington Capitals slide by Ottawa Senators 2-1 with the help of Tomas Vokoun -NHL Match Update
It was a moment of thanksgiving for Washington who acquired veteran goalie, Tomas Vokoun, over the offseason after signing him to a tryout contract with the team when he blocked all 33 shots except for one for a near shutout of Ottawa Senators.
Capitals, with the help of Vokoun, slid past Senators, 2-1, on Saturday night, October 15, at the sold-out Verizon Center in Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
Knowing that Ottawa Senators were on the hunt for another win after losing against Colorado Avalanche, 7-1, in their previous 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season matchup, Vokoun had to keep himself cemented in the net.
"I suspected it was going to be a really tough game", Vokoun said. "I have been on that side before, what they are going through. You know you're coming back and you're angry, the coaches are angry and yelling at the players. Everybody comes out and gives
their best effort".
Senators gave two power play opportunities to Washington during the first period, while Capitals managed to take advantage of one of them with Nicklas Backstrom scoring his first of the season nearly midway through.
Marcus Johansson widened the gap nearly four minutes later for his second of the season, but was closely followed by Peter Regin who scored at the 19:34 mark, putting Ottawa back into the matchup.
In a attempt to make a comeback to take over the match or even levelling it, Ottawa had 26 of its 34 attempts in the second and third period alone, but failed to shoot the puck through a hot headed Tomas Vokoun, frustrating them even further.
"We're disappointed with the outcome", Ottawa Senators head coach, Paul MacLean, said. "I thought we deserved a way better fate with the way that we played".
Washington Capitals hope to continue their perfect winning streak of four matchups against Florida Panthers on Tuesday as Tomas Vokoun gears up to play against his former team.
Ottawa Senators of the other hand just want to get out of the losing trance that they have got sucked into against Philadelphia Flyers on the same day.
