Washington Capitals win 3-2 against struggling Carolina Hurricanes
Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal in eight games, and also provided an assist to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes was quick out of the blocks, firing shots at the opposing goal regularly. The home team kept piling the pressure, and almost came close to scoring on several occasions. Carolina displayed some excellent shooting and passing abilities,
which got them past the defence regularly, but they were let down by some poor finishing.
The away team then slowly settled into the match, and started to create chances of their own as the opening period progressed. The Capitals managed to score in the 14th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Mathieu Perreault from a well placed
flick shot.
The Hurricanes made a few more goal attempts towards the end of the period, but no further goals were scored, as the Washington Capitals led 1-0 at the break. During the course of the period, Carolina Hurricanes made 16 goal attempts, while the Washington
Capitals made eight goal attempts.
Both teams made a strong start to the second period, and put together some brilliant attacking moves. It was the home team who scored the first goal of the period, through Jussi Jokinen from a well placed shot in the eighth minute.
The Capitals started to attack more frequently after they conceded the equaliser. The away team then scored again in the 11th minute to retake the lead. The goal was scored by David Steckel. The Washington Capitals then scored through Captain Alex Ovechkin
in the 19th minute to give his side in a comfortable 3-1 position.
The period ended with the Washington Capitals making 16 goal attempts compared to the Hurricanes 12 goal attempts.
The final period saw the Carolina Hurricanes scoring in the first minute to cut the lead to just one goal, and set up an exciting finish to the game. The goal was scored by Tuomo Ruutu from a brilliant tip in shot. The period didn’t see any further goals,
as the Washington Capitals won the match 3-2.
During the course of the final 20 minutes of play, Washington Capitals made six goal attempts, while the Carolina Hurricanes made seven goal attempts. Alex Ovechkin was named the star player of the match with his goal and an assist.
