Washington Capitals win 3-2 against the Florida Panthers after overtime to close the gap on Bruins in the Eastern Conference

Another one of Sunday’s games was hosted by the Florida Panthers at the Bank Atlantic Center as they were up against the Washington Capitals.
A win was more important for the Capitals as they are looking to close the gap on the second placed Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference while the Panthers had nothing to lose as they are almost out of play-off contention.
Both teams were pretty much even during the opening period which resulted in the game being level at the end of the first period.
However, with the Capitals leading as the final period began it took a lot of skill for the Panthers to level the scores.
The scores were level at the end of the regulation time on 2-2 so the game went into overtime.
However, Capitals scored in overtime to win the game by 3-2 in the end.
Alexander Semin of Capitals was named the star of the game as he scored the winning goal.  
Panthers made a decent start to the game which saw them coming across quite a few scoring chances early on.
Their passing was brilliant and the attacks they made were surely to bring a goal. However, the opposing goal keeper was strong early on as he didn’t allow any goals.
However, it was the Panthers who struck first blood with a goal in the 16th minute with Bill Thomas scoring the goal from a brilliant flick shot.
Panthers slowed some sluggish defence after this which cost them the lead. The goal was scored by Nicklas Backstrom from a powerful strike in the 18th minute.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the course of the period, the Panthers made 16 goal attempts while the Capitals could manage just six shots on goal.
The second period began with the Capitals making a strong start to the game which saw them showing some solid offence and defence early.
Their passing and shooting was decent at the start but they weren’t able to find the back of the net.
Resultantly, it was the Capitals scored through Boyd Gordon from a brilliant backhand shot to get into the lead in the 11th minute.
Panthers also came up with quite a few shots on goal but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
The period ended with the Capitals leading 2-1 as they made 12 goal attempts during the period while the Panthers made 9 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play didn’t see much happening and it looked as if the Capitals would win the game.
However, the Panthers scored through David Booth’s backhand shot in the 18th minute to level the scores.
The period and the game ended with the scores level on 2-2. During the final period, the Capitals made 6 goal attempts while the Panthers made 9 shots on goal.
The game went into overtime as a result where the Capitals scored in the very first minute through Alexander Semin from a powerful strike to win the game 3-2 in the end.
