Washington Capitals wins 2-1 against Carolina Hurricanes to thwart their playoff hopes - NHL Recap

The second game of Friday was played at the Verizon Center as Washington Capitals played host to Carolina Hurricanes.
Hurricanes needed the win to make their way into the playoff cut while for Capitals it was a game where they could make ground on the teams above them.
The game started off with both teams making a decent start to the game. There were scoring chances for both sides but they were unable to score any goals.
The second period was almost the same with a couple of more goal attempts made by each team. Hurricanes got ahead right at the death of the period.
However, Capitals scored twice during the final period to win the game 2-1 in the end.
Matt Hendricks, centre of Capitals, was named the star of the game as he scored winning goal.
Capitals started off making a few shots on goal. With the passage of time shots increased and the plays started that were constructed were dangerous. Capitals almost scored in the 6th minute but the shot went just wide off the target.
Hurricanes also caught pace and momentum was running in their favour. Hurricanes made shots every now and then but couldn’t find a way past the opposing defence. The period ended with the scores deadlocked on 0-0. During the period, Hurricanes made 13 shots
on goal while Capitals made 9 shots on goal.
The second started off in the same manner with both teams coming up with strong shots on goal. There were regular shots on goal and some of them were after some individual brilliance by some players. The passing was superb and the most of the shots they
fired were on target.
Throughout the period it looked as if a goal would be scored but it wasn’t. Both teams continued to attack right till the end of the period and it was Hurricanes who finally scored in the final minute through Tuomo Ruutu from a quick fired shot.  
The period ended with Hurricanes leading 1-0. During the course of the period, Hurricanes made 12 shots on goal while Capitals made 10 shots on goal.
Capitals made a great start to the final period as they successfully scored in the very first minute through Alex Ovechkin to level the scores. The goal was scored as a result of a brilliant quick fired shot.
Capitals faced a tough time from the opposing offence but they were able to cope up with it and managed to score in the 8th minute to get into the lead.
The goal was scored by Matt Hendricks from a well placed shot. The period ended with the teams making a few more shots on goal but there were no further goals as the game ended with Capitals winning the game 2-1.
