Washington Huskies’ Jake Locker says he will start against Stanford Cardinals
Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker says that despite his injuries he will start against the Stanford Cardinals when the two teams meet up on Saturday 30 October.
Locker has been knocked around the last three weeks, playing against the Arizona State Sun Devils on 9 October with a sore thigh and an illness. The youngster was effective enough in his team’s loss and made the start the following week against the Oregon
State Beavers. However, in the game against the Beavers Locker bruised his ribs and was limited in his next game against the Arizona Wildcats. The Huskies went on to lose the game by the wide margin of 44-14.
Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian discussed Locker’s limited abilities in the Arizona game. “Ultimately, as much as I want them to perform and to play well, I want them to be healthy. I want to make sure that I don’t expose them to things that could
further injure them,” said the head coach. “I wasn’t going to do that last week with Jake. I wasn’t going to put him out there and run him between the tackles and take hits that he didn’t need to take. That’s the reason we lost the game.”
Locker’s propensity to run the ball into high-risk areas has led to a number of injuries throughout his career at Washington. As a freshman, the quarterback missed several games with a head injury and the following year was forced out with a broken thumb.
His junior year was also featured nagging injuries, most notably one to his thigh.
Nevertheless, Locker continues to go to the hard areas of the field.
“Hopefully, I get to run around a little bit this week and get feeling a little bit better and then we’re able to do what we’re accustomed to doing,” said the quarterback.
So far this season Locker has thrown for 1,614 yards and 14 touchdowns.
