Washington Huskies end three-game losing skid

The Washington Huskies ended their three-game losing streak with a victory over the UCLA Bruins, 24-7, on 18 November.  The win brings the Huskies record to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in conference, while the Bruins fall to 2-9 overall and 1-7 in conference.

Game highlights

UCLA got the party started in the first quarter with a 31-yard run by sophomore running back Johnathan Franklin.  The Bruins defence clamped down on the Huskies throughout the first quarter and all the way until 5:57 of the second quarter when Washington
finally broke through.

Huskies quarterback Jake Locker ran the ball in from three yards away to knot the score at 7-7 going into half time.

The third quarter was a defensive showdown as neither offence could get much done.  The only scoring that occurred was Washington’s Erik Folk hit a 27-yard field goal to give the Huskies their first lead
of the game.

Cornerback Quinton Richardson came up with a huge interception and ran the ball back for a touchdown at 6:22 of the fourth quarter.  The Huskies capped the game off with a Chris Polk two-yard rushing touchdown.

Games statistical leaders

Jake Locker for the Huskies threw for a measly 68 yards and completed only 10 of 21 attempts in the victory.  Bruins starting quarterback Richard Brehaut had only five completions for 42 yards, but left the game half way through the third quarter with
a concussion.  His back up, Darius Bell, had no prior experience and attempted only three passes, two of them incomplete and one was the intercepted by Richardson.

Bruins rushing leader was Franklin, who managed 53 yards on 18 touches with a touchdown.  The Huskies' Polk was their horse on this night as he rushed for 138 yards on 26 carries with a touchdown.

Bruins junior wide receiver Taylor Embree led UCLA in receiving with just a single reception worth 16 yards.  On the Huskies side, Devin Aguilar had two receptions worth 29 yards.

It is clear that both offences were not playing well on this night, as the Bruins and their three quarterbacks combined for only 55 yards through the air and three interceptions.  It was the Huskies rushing
game that put them over the edge as they tore through the UCLA defense with 253 yards and two touchdowns.

What’s next

UCLA has two more games left on their schedule and will be looking to finish the season on a winning note.  26 November has them battling Arizona State and the Bruins wrap their season up against in state rival USC.

For Washington, they also have two games remaining on their schedule.  First up is California Golden Bears on 27 November, and they finish with their finale against state rival Washington State on 4 December.
