Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever win – WNBA Roundup June 26, 2011: Part 2
Washington Mystics 83 – Tulsa Shock 63
On Sunday night, the Washington Mystics avenged an 18-point defeat by Tulsa Shock on June 18, with an impressive 83-63 win. The victory snapped the four-game losing streak of Mystics.
Four Washington starters scored in double figures on the night. Centre Crystal Langhorne was topped all scorers with 23 points and seven rebounds. Nicky Anosike recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds while Marissa Coleman also scored
13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for Washington, who also got 21 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals from Matee Ajavon.
For Tulsa, Liz Cambage scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sheryl Swoopes also had 11 points and four rebounds in Shock’s third consecutive defeat.
Washington played one of their best defensive games in the season choked Tulsa from the field, limiting them to just 35.3 percent.
Washington opened the first quarter on a 9-0 run to control the game from the start. Tulsa fought back though and Cambage’s jumper at the 9:44 mark cut the deficit to just one, 17-16. Mystics then went on a 5-2 run to take a 24-18
lead into the second.
Washington and Tulsa scored 17 points each in the third period. Mystics outscored the Shock 20-10 in the third quarter and never trailed after that.
Indiana Fever 78 – Minnesota Lynx 75
Katie Douglas scored a game-high 22 points, including a go-ahead jumper with 01:40 remaining in the game as Indiana Fever squeaked past Minnesota Lynx 78-75 at the Target Center. It was the third straight win for Indiana.
Tamika Catchings had 17 points while Jeanette Pohlen came off the bench with 10 points for Indiana, who rose to the top of the Eastern Conference with a 6-3 record.
Maya Moore led Minnesota with 21 points while Lindsay Whalen chipped in with 12 points. Taj McWilliams-Franklin and Seimone Augustus posted 10 points apiece while Rebekkah Brunson grabbed 11 rebounds in Lynx’s second consecutive
loss.
Indiana shoots 88.9 percent from free throw line and 45.8 from the field. Lynx, on the other hand, shot just 63.2 percent from the line and 40.5 percent of their field goals.
Rookie Moore scored 17 of her points in the first half as Minnesota carried a one-point lead, 41-40, at halftime. Lynx stretched their lead to 49-44 early in the third quarter but Fever responded with six unanswered points to go
ahead by 50-49 with 03:20 to go in the third. Minnesota however went on an 11-6 run in the last two and half minutes of the third period to carry a 60-56 advantage into the final stanza.
Fever trailed the Lynx 73-71 with 02:19 to go in the fourth quarter, but Douglas slipped in a lay-up to knot the game at 73. She then nailed a jumper on the next possession and put the game to bed.
