Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx win - WNBA Roundup June 9, 2011
Four teams of the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) went head-to-head on June 9, 2011. The Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx came out on top in their respective games. Here is an overview of the matchups:
Washington Mystics 98 - Atlanta Dream 90
Crystal Langhorne scored a game-high 30 points and clutched 13 rebounds as the Washington Mystics beat the Minnesota Lynx 98-90 in overtime at Philips Arena.
Nicky Anosike had 29 points and 13 boards while guard Matee Ajavon contributed 24 points, four assists, and four steals in the victory. Kelly Miller also finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists for the Mystics,
who were swept by Atlanta in conference finals of the 2010 season.
Erika DeSouza, who left the court with 2:44 to go in overtime because of a nose injury, posted a team-high 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Dream. Iziane Castro Marques chipped in with 16 points and five assists while
guard-forward Armintie Price came off the bench with 12 points in the losing effort.
Guard Lindsey Harding chipped in with 11 points while Sancho Lyttle scored 10 points in the second consecutive defeat for the Eastern Conference champion.
Dream played comparatively well in the first half of the game and held a 47-40 lead at its culmination. Both teams played a close game throughout the third quarter; scoring 28 points apiece ensuring that Atlanta maintained a 75-68
lead, going into the final stanza.
In a tightly contested fourth quarter, Atlanta took an 85-82 lead with 01:59 to go. However, Kelly Miller hit a three to knot the game 85, sending it into overtime. The Mystics were impressive in the O.T. and went on a on a 4-0
run down the stretch to seal the game.
Minnesota Lynx 81 - Seattle Storm 74
Rebekkah Brunson registered her fourth straight double-double with a team-high 22 points, on a shooting 9-for-11 from the field, and a game-high 14 rebounds as Minnesota Lynx knocked down Seattle Storm 81-74 at Key Arena.
Seimone Augustus added 17 points while Lindsay Whalen scored 13 points and a game-high 10 assists in the victory.
Guard Sue Bird chipped in with a game-high 24 pints while forward Swin Cash posted 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the defending champion Seattle.
Minnesota were unstoppable in the first quarter and outscored the Storm 28-8 at its end. They continued to pound the Seattle defence in the second quarter and stretched their lead to 50-24 at the end of first half. The third quarter
was a closer affair as both the team tied in scoring. Trailing by 26 points after three quarters, Storm mounted a comeback in the fourth and cut the deficit to six points with 29 seconds remaining. However, Lynx made six straight free throws in the closing
seconds of the game to seal the victory.
