Washington Mystics hold on to a 67-66 win against Indiana Fever; End a four game losing streak – WNBA Recap
Crystal Langhorne notched up a double-double performance of 22 points and 13 rebounds to help Washington Mystics hold of Indiana Fever`s late charge and win the matchup 67-66 in a game that was not decided until the final buzzer.
“We made some mistakes down the stretch, but it's a relief to pull off the win,” said Langhorne after the game.
The win for Washington also helped them put an end to their four game losing streak while giving Indiana their third loss in as many games. Matee Ajavon played a crucial role in the game for the Mystics by putting up 15 points
which included a 2 of 3 outing from beyond the arc and 5 of 5 shooting from the stripe.
Tamika Catchings put up 15 points for Indiana but her efforts did not prove enough as she missed her last attempt from behind the three point line to win the game. Katie Douglas was still able to get the rebound and get of a shot
at the buzzer but she failed to hit her mark as well.
“We missed so many shots throughout the game, and me personally, I missed a lot of layups a lot of open shots,'' Catchings said. “You've got to credit them, they did a great job tonight.''
The significant factor in the Fever trailing by 10 points after three quarters was their poor conversion rate from the free throw line. They only converted 17 of their 26 attempts in the game whereas the Washington team went 18-20
from the stripe.
In the early stages of the ball game, both teams tried their best to go at each other and were almost on level terms after the opening period with Indiana holding a 15-14 lead.
By the 6:43 mark in the second quarter, the score were level pegging at 19. From that point on to just over a minute in the frame, Washington put together a 7-0 run which allowed them hold a sizable 6 point lead at the half, 37-31.
The early stages of the third quarter saw the Mystics prolong their lead into double figures and despite Indiana`s best efforts to cut back the advantage, they were able to maintain the double figure lead after three quarters of
game time had been played, 59-49.
However, Indiana who had come into the game after losing on their last two outings were not going out that easy. In the first 7:14 minutes of the fourth, Fever put together a 12-4 run to make it a two point game.
The remaining time in the game first saw the Washington establish a 5 point lead with 46.2 seconds remaining and the Indiana side cut the lead down to 1 with 28.3 seconds remaining.
In the final seconds of the game Fever had two opportunities to take away the game but their best efforts came just a little too short.
