Washington Nationals, Milwaukee Brewers hopeful of signing Jose Reyes – MLB Update
The New York Mets, as expected, did not make any offer for Jose Reyes in the allotted time to teams for exclusive negotiations with free agents and will now gauge the market value of their Shortstop when other teams place a bid on their home-grown All-Star.
With an established talent that he is, Reyes will now want to cash in on his achievements and thus not settle for a contract that does not suffice. Although his leg injuries have been a concern for interested parties, they are certainly not a hindrance.
The Mets have voiced their desire of slashing the payroll by about 30-million-dollars for 2012 and thus have refrained from making a lucrative offer to Reyes.
Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson asserted that the team aims at strengthening the bull-pen during the offseason and thus will not be inclined on spending extra cash for Reyes. The player, a source believes, is not ready to strike a discounted deal to
stay with the Mets. Furthermore, with the likes of Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves strong in the National League East, chances for Mets to qualify for the postseason are low and thus serve no attraction for Reyes.
With Ruben Tejada already named as a possible replacement for Reyes, Alderson believes that the ballclub has ample time to reconsider their thoughts about the 28-year-old Shortstop, who will be testing the rough waters of free market for the first time.
The Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers have openly expressed their desire to lure the shortstop into their roster for 2012. The Nationals are in a rebuilding phase and thus are looking for players who have the ability and talent to represent the
team for a longer-term. Financial backing is not an issue for the ballclub and spending on a player like Reyes will be worth it.
The Nationals signed Davey Johnson to manage the team for 2012 and are going the extra mile to attract top-quality players in a bid to earn postseason qualification in the next season.
The Brewers, on the contrary, have a vacant position at shortstop and Ryan Braun is actively lobbying for Reyes. However, it remains to be seen how things unfold in the future.
