Washington Nationals Davey Johnson confident to win fourth ring of his career-MLB Update
Addressing to a group of people in a ceremony held in D.C. Chamber of Commerce, Washington Nationals’ manager, Davey Johnson, reiterated his confidence in the current team.
He is highly hopeful that he can lead the Nationals to World Series victory in the upcoming season.
Johnson nearly missed winning a glory for the Nationals in the last season.
Under his supervision, the team made it to the playoffs. Just when the journey toward the bigger goal could start, they lost Game 5 of the National League Division Series to the St. Louis Cardinals. That ended their campaign.
Johnson is of the view that the team has learned lessons from the last season. The players are ready to put up improved shows and build on a success achieved during 2012 until the regular season.
One of greatest reasons why Washington struggled in the playoffs was an inability of the players to perform well under pressure.
Being an organisation, which has never been in the post-season for the last many years, their players lack experience of the big games.
For example, pitchers, which are considered to be their strength, floundered in 2012 during the NLDS.
Gio Gonzalez, despite being exceptional all through the year, failed miserably against the Cardinals in the playoffs.
As soon as he started in the high profile games, his control went awry and the oppositions began scoring runs against him easily.
Just like Gonzalez, there were other hurlers in the team that leaked runs during the important matches.
As for the upcoming season, Johnson has declared that 2013 is the year after which he will leave the Nationals. In order to make it a special part of his memories, winning the World Series is extremely important.
“Next year is going to be my last year and I’m going to go out with my fourth World Series ring,” said Johnson.
Talking about how he felt when he joined the Nationals, Johnson has shared his feelings.
“I love the Baltimore/Washington area,” Johnson continued. “My wish when I came here is that I wouldn’t get fired for the fifth time. But I really got a great group of guys at Nats Park. If you think this last year was a good year, let me tell you something:
we have a higher ceiling than last year.”
Certainly, Johnson’s confidence in the team can increase expectations of the fans substantially. Meeting them will be a great challenge for him.
